The Black Death (bubonic plague) was a plaugue that was spreat by fleas that attached themselves to rats, which ended up killing off one third of the European population. Due to this a great deal of artwork during this time involved death and skeletons. Before doctors were widespread, priest, would both attempt to give aid to the sick as well as preform funeral rights. Unfortunatly being around the infected so much led to the large majority of priest dying and thus their ranks would be filled by those who were less than qualified.
